آب فراوانترین عنصر با قابلیت اطفا در بین مواد اطفا کننده میباشد که از دیرباز در زمینه اطفا حریق مورد استفاده و بهره برداری قرار گرفته است. ساده ترین شکل استفاده از این نعمت خدادای در کنترل حریق پاشش آب بر روی آتش بوده که در ابتدایی ترین حالت صنعتی به صورت بشکه های حاوی آب که در محیط خطر جانمایی شده و توسط فیتیله به دینامیت هایی جهت انفجار بشکه و پخش آب در محیط مجهز می گشتند.
اساس کار سیستم Water-mist مطابق بر تولید غبار آب میباشد که به صورت تولید ذرات ریز آب در محیط عمل میکند. قطر این ذرات در این سیستم بین 10 تا 100 میکرون میباشد. در این سیستم آب با فشار بسیار بالایی که توسط سیستم تامین فشار تولید میشود در شبکه توزیع میگردد، فشار بالای تولید شده سبب تخلیه آب از نازل به صورت ذرات بسیار ریز می باشد این ویژگی در سیستم Water-mist سبب میشود که بر اساس استفاده از گرمای نهان تبخیر آب درجذب حرارت حریق متفاوت با حالت معمول خود رفتار کند در این حالت آب ویژگی سرد کنندگی خود را دارا میباشد اما به دلیل تبدیل شدن به پودر در فضای تخلیه شده به طور کامل پخش میشود که در این حالت پوششی در اطراف حریق تشکیل میدهد که مانع از رسیدن اکسیژن به حریق میشود و همچنین خاصیت جذب حرارت توسط ذرات آب بیش از حالت معمول آن میباشدکه این مقدار 1700 برابربیشتر ازحالت معمول سیستم اطفا اسپرینکلر میباشد.. از مهمترین تغییراتی که در این حالت رخ میدهد عدم اثر خیس کنندگی و مرطوبیت بر روی محیط و اشیا میباشد.
سیستم اطفاء حریق واتر میست بر اساس دسته بندی NFPA750 دارای سه تقسیم بندی می باشد که عبارت است از سیستم فشار بالا ، سیستم فشار متوسط و سیستم فشار پایین می باشد.در نوع اول فشار کاری بالا سیستم حدود۱۰۰-۱6۰بار می باشد و آب کاملا به مه تبدیل می شود و جذب حرارت تا ۱۷0۰ برابر نسبت به اسپرینکلرهای معمولی افزایش پیدامی کند ، سیستم واترمیست فشار متوسط دامنه کاربردی کمتری دارد و فشار کاری آن زیر ۳۵ بار می باشد ، نوع سیستم با فشارکاری ۴-۱۲بار در محدوده فشار کاری اسپرینکلرهای معمولی با مختصر تغییری در سیستم پمپاژ قابل استفاده می باشد و آب را کاملا پودر و به ذرات ریز تبدیل مینماید، مزایای آن نسبت به سیستم آبپاش معمولی مصرف آب کمتر در حدود 4/۱ بوده و با توجه به افزایش سطح پخش ذرات آب، اطفا سریعتر (تا ۵۰ برابر) میباشد توجه به این نکته ضروری است که تعداد زیاد اسپرینکلرها و میزان آبدهی بالای اسپرینکلرها (تقریبا 67 لیتر بر دقیقه) در سازه های بزرگ و لوکس مانند برجها، هتلها، سالنهای همایش و مجتمعهای مرتفع و عدم وجود مجراهایی جهت تخلیه حجم آب تولیدی در اثر تخلیه سیستم اطفاء حریق و آسیبهای مشهود آب در سیستم آبپاش معمولی به تجهیزات و از همه مهمتر به کل سازه ساختمان پیشنهاد می گردد با تغییر سیستم پمپاژ و پایپینگ و استفاده از نازلهای واتر میست میزان خسارت تحمیلی از سوی سیستم آبی حذف شود.

از دیگر تقسیم بندی سیستم اطفا واتر میست مربوط به نوع سیستم تامین فشار میباشد.که تقسیم بندی آن از قرار زیر میباشد.
الف) تولید فشار توسط کپسول گاز پرفشار
این سیستم با استفاده از دو نوع کپسول طراحی و ارایه میگردد، یکی شامل آب و دیگری شامل گاز پرفشار (گاز نیتروژن با فشار 230 bar ) میباشد که کپسول گاز به آب متصل است و توسط رگلاتوری فشار آن مطابق خواست طراح برای تخلیه در یک بازه زمانی معین تنظیم و تعدیل میگردد. اساس کار این سیستم به این گونه است که پس از اعلام حریق توسط سیستم کنترل پنلی فرمان جهت تخلیه عامل اطفا کننده صادر میگردد دراین هنگام گاز نیتروژن به داخل سیلندر آب تزریق میگردد و همزمان شیر الکتریکی واقع بر ابتدای شبکه لولهکشی باز میشود و عمل تزریق آب به شبکه و در نهایت تخلیه آن با فشار و سرعت بالا صورت میپذیرد.
ب) تولید فشار توسط واحد پمپ
به منظور تولید فشار توسط پمپ نیاز به طراحی و تجهیز مخزن ذخیره آب می باشد که بر اساس حجم محیط و مواد موجود در آن و خطرپذیری محیط تحت حفاظت محاسبه میشود. از آنجایی که مخزن و واحد پمپ نیاز به در نظر گرفتن فضا دارد لذا این سیستم برای فضاهای با حجم بالا مورد استفاده قرار میگیرد.
